UAE Traffic Law: Driving Offences That May Result in Licence Suspension or Cancellation
In a bid to enhance road safety and curb major offences, the UAE has implemented new, tighter traffic rules under Federal Decree-Law No. 14 of 2024, which will take effect in March of 2025. Offenders have been identified by authorities for particular offences that may result in the suspension of the driving licence or permanent cancellation.
Alcohol and drug driving is one of the gravest crimes. Violators can be subjected to incarceration, fines and a minimum of three months suspension of their licence. Recurrent offences may be subject to a more lengthy suspension, and repeat offences may incur total suspension of the licence.
Another serious offence is to drive without a legitimate licence or to make use of an unrecognized licence. The penalties that first-time offenders are liable to are either hefty fines or a brief jail term. Repeat offences are punishable more severely, with jail terms and increased fines, and even driving license suspension.
Additional Violations That Can Lead to Licence Suspension
The black points system of the UAE is also vital in controlling the behaviour of drivers. Any driver who gathers 24 black points on their account will automatically be suspended, typically for a few months. Repeat offences may be followed by an extension of the suspension period or may demand that the driver be retrained before the licence is reinstated.
Careless driving, speeding, and leading to grave accidents are other crimes that can lead to suspension, imposition of vehicle and imposing heavy fines. In more extreme situations, the authorities can revoke licences over a longer period of time or even refuse renewal rights.
The authorities stress that these tougher laws are meant to enhance road discipline and minimize road injuries and deaths. Motorists have been highly encouraged to observe road laws to escape severe legal repercussions.
