Why Furniture Gets Damaged in a Sharjah Move — Prevention Tips | Laila Movers
The damage in a house move is not so spectacular. It’s a scratch on the side of a wardrobe from the lift door, a dining table leg that was never quite true again, a sofa arm that was scuffed against a wall in the loading bay. They are small things, but add up, and in Sharjah’s rental market, where furniture is one of the most important things the renter has in his possession, they count.
In all of the above-mentioned parts of Al Nahda, Al Majaz, Muwaileh and the villa areas, the same few issues appear repeatedly – and almost all of them are preventable.
Disassembly done in a hurry
The most frequent problem to furniture damage is disassembling too little, or disassembling badly.
No double bed (with or without headboard) will turn on a landing of a Sharjah stairwell. When it comes to a wardrobe carried whole, it’s just too heavy for the crew and the base will show. Only glass-topped dining tables and TV units are able to survive if the glass is separated, wrapped individually, carried upright.
Good crews disassemble things systematically and store the parts in a small bag with the thing it belongs to — a small bag of screws taped to the headboard or the inside of a wardrobe door. Until you’re at nine at night in the new apartment with a bed frame but no bolts, it’s not a big deal. Before they begin, brief them before and then ask the crew specifically what they plan to disassemble, and be sure to include anything that will not fit through the standard door in one piece.
Wrapping that protects the wrong thing
Stretch film alone is no protection. Useful for keeping doors closed and drawers shut but not a thing for a knock. The protecting is done with blankets and the blankets are held in place by film. You’ll have marks if you bring them in with rolls of film, but no blankets.
Damage occurs at corners: table edges, wardrobe corners, sofa arms. These require padding – not simply a layer of plastic. Mattresses must be in a bag or have a cover, as there are no clean truck floors. Mirrors and framed works of art require a flat carton or at least a piece of cardboard on both sides, and must be transported upright, not flat so that something can be placed on them.
When it comes to this, a professional Furniture Movers in Sharjah will be able to distinguish themselves from a truck and two men. Materials were a little high, the time was a little higher and the end result was furniture that looked exactly the way it started.
The lift, the stairs and the loading bay
There are a lot of scratches and dents in the 30 metres between the apartment door and the truck.
Often the service lifts in towers in Sharjah are narrower than they appear and they close on the obstacle in the pathway. Corners are important in buildings without lifts — which are found in older parts of Al Ghuwair, Rolla and Al Qasimia. Furniture is placed on walls or railings near loading bays which are shared with delivery vans and other neighbors’ vehicles as the truck is moved around.
Simple things help. Make sure that a sofa is not sitting in the corridor while the service lift is being performed. Confirm with the lift before moving day if they will be able to lift the biggest piece or not, if not, they need to have enough people for the stairs. Lay blanket under furniture wherever necessary. Keep the path clear from door to truck – the boxes that are left ‘just for a minute’ in the hallway are the ones that the wardrobe gets caught in.
Reassembly at the other end
The move is not completed until the truck is empty. Beds, wardrobes and tables must be put back together, which is where a rushed crew cuts corners — a bolt that’s loose and a wardrobe back panel that’s not seated and a table leg that’s cross-threaded. It’s also the place where damage from the trip might become evident—here’s the time to view.
When the builders are still around, walk through the new home. Unlock wardrobe doors, sit on bed, touch table sides. If it’s been marked in transit, make sure to record it on the delivery paperwork before the crew departs; it will be much more difficult to do the following day. The reputable Furniture Movers in Sharjah will have a damage clause or insurance agreement with you and will expect you to check — their protection is yours as well.
In short
Damage to furniture during a move isn’t always a risk of moving. It is from the parts that were meant to be disassembled and not, it seems, from the film that was meant to be used for blankets, or from the distance of 30 metres between the door and the truck, or from a reassembly that nobody checked. Check each of those prior to booking, watch for them on the day and most of the little scratches that become dispute over deposits simply will not occur.
